tvOS Hack Brings Safari Web Browser To Apple TV 4 [Video]
08:02 By

Apple’s fourth generation Apple TV is now on sale, and while Apple didn’t exactly make a song and dance out of the product’s release, that doesn’t mean people aren’t keen to see what the little black puck is capable of. With a whole new App Store and more processing power under the hood, all eyes are on the new Apple TV.
If there’s one thing that the newly updated Apple TV is missing, though, it’s a web browser. The new Apple TV doesn’t ship with a version of Safari built in and Apple hasn’t made it possible for third-party developers to make their own, at least not officially.
Apple-TV-browser
Dutch developer jvanakker has thumbed his nose at Apple by making his very own tvOS web browser, bringing the web to the big screen via Apple TV. It’s not the first time a piece of hardware has made it possible to browse the web on the TV, but this is a first for the Apple TV, so is notable nonetheless.
In order to make this work, jvanakker has forked developer Steven Troughton-Smith’s tvOSBrowser project, creating the UIWebView-based browser using Apple’s own private Safari APIs. The use of that API is what will ensure this never sees the light of day on the App Store though, at least not unless Apple makes that particular API less private, and much more public in the future. Apple has a history for opening private APIs on iOS, so never say never.
Whether you really want to use an Apple TV web browser on your TV is another matter entirely. This offering uses the Siri Remote’s touch pad to scroll around, while pressing it down will make a cursor appear on-screen for clicking things. The Menu button takes users back a page, and the Play/Pause button allows the entry of URLs. It’s usable, from what we’ve seen, but we wouldn’t want to use it full time.
Does that make it any less cool? No. No it does not!

Enable Siri On Apple TV 4 In Unsupported Countries, Here’s How
07:56 By

We recently shared with you the reason behind the new Apple TV only supporting Siri in certain countries, with the fact that it needed extra training to understand how people from different parts of the globe pronounce names being the main culprit. That explanation is all well and good if you happen to live somewhere where that training has happened, and Siri is live on your Apple TV. If the opposite is true, though, it can be very disappointing indeed.
Thankfully, where there is a will there is a way, and if you really want to be able to take advantage of the new Apple TV’s excellent Siri support but are not in one of the eight supported countries, then you’re not completely out of luck.
Apple TV 4 with Siri Remote main
Here’s how to enable Siri on the new Apple TV even if it’s not supported in your country:
Step 1: Using the new Siri Remote, click on Settings.
Settings Apple TV 4
Step 2: First up, change the language of your Apple TV to English from Settings > General > Language And Region > Language.
Apple-TV-settings-General-Language
Step 3: Next, navigate to Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store > Preferences > Location and now change the Apple TV’s App Store location to United States, or another country so long as it’s one of the eight supported by Siri on Apple TV – UK, US, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Spain or Japan.
iTunes-and-App-Store-Apple-TV
Step 4: Sign in with a U.S. Apple ID from Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store. If you don’t already have one, then making one isn’t a huge task, but one that you might want to follow ourguide for just to make sure that you get everything just right. A foreign Apple Store ID, especially a U.S. one, may come in handy at a later date too. You never know when something will be live in the U.S. App Store but nowhere else, for example.
Step 5: And there you have it. You may need to reboot your Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart for the changes to take hold, but that shouldn’t be the case. It’s always worth a try, though. If everything goes normally, you should have Siri option under Settings > General > Siri. Turn it On.

Step 6: Learn not to feel like a moron talking to your TV.

Nexus 6P Owners Report Spontaneous Glass Cracking On Device
07:51 By

Huawei’s Nexus 6P has managed to garner a whole heap of attention over the last few weeks due to it being pushed as one of the latest flagship Nexus devices to hit the Android arena. The majority of that initial attention was soaked with positives vibes, but that positivity seems to be quickly fading into the depths of despair as yet another set of users take to social media to complain about the seemingly poorly build quality of the device. This time it’s the glass “visor” on the rear of the smartphone that’s coming in for negative commentary.
For those that may not be familiar with the physical structure of the Nexus 6P, the hardware comes with a strip of Gorilla Glass 4 across the top of the rear of the device that’s in place to not only from an aesthetic view point, but to also offer protection to the underlying camera lens. The existence of this glass panel, or “visor” as it’s being referred to due to its appearance, was immediately criticized by reviewers of the hardware. The fact that users have been taking to Reddit to complain of it spontaneously cracking adds a little credibility to those design criticisms.
Nexus 6P
Huawei’s latest smartphone has already been criticized for the fact that it bends quite easily and the main display cracks under pressure as part of that bending process. However, both of those issues actually occur when an individual is deliberately attempting to cause damage to the hardware, or when it comes under unexpected pressure, such as being in a pocket and sat on.
nexus-6P-cracks
The latest shots to be taken of the device are notably more worrying as the glass seems to be cracking without being dropped or coming under any blunt force trauma from an external object. Just spontaneous and unexplained cracking of the Gorilla Glass 4.
nexus-6P-cracks-1
As is usually the case when anything is reported via any social media platform, the conspiracy theories have begun as to why this could be happening. Some individuals believe that the cracking could be a result of Huawei neglecting to build in a common plastic shock ring that offers protection to glass panels. Others believe that the spontaneous destruction could be due to the glass overheating or suffering from sudden and unexpected temperature changes in the environment.
The manufacturer of the device is yet to issue any official word on the issue, but we’ll be sure to let you know if one filters down.

tvOS 9.0.1 For Apple TV 4 Released
07:50 By

Apple has just released tvOS 9.0.1 for the new Apple TV 4. This is the first public update released after the new Apple TV went on sale about one and a half weeks ago from today and also comes less than a week after Apple seeded first tvOS 9.1 beta to developers.
While Apple hasn’t released any official changelog for tvOS 9.0.1 yet, it’s likely that this release for Apple TV contains general performance improvements and minor bug fixes to address teething issues found in initial tvOS 9.0 firmware. If we find any other change in this update, we’ll obviously add it to this post.
tvOS 9.0.1 main
To update your new Apple TV fourth-generation to the latest firmware version via OTA (Over-The-Air) update system, simply head to: Settings> System > MAINTENANCE: Software Updates > Update Software.
tvOS 9.0.1 update
Alternatively, you can also download tvOS 9.0.1 .IPSW file directly from below and then update to it using iTunes on your computer. To update Apple TV using iTunes, you will need a USB-C to USB-A cable in order to connect your Apple TV to a Mac or Windows computer.
Once the update is complete, head to Settings > General > About and make sure the tvOS version shown now is 9.0.1 (13T402). If you see this version and build number, it means you have successfully updated to the latest tvOS firmware.
So, have you updated to the latest Apple TV firmware? Found anything new or interesting that we haven’t mentioned here? Share with us in the comments section below.

Tag Heuer Connected $1500 Android Wear Watch Is Official, Here Are The Details
07:49 By

It seems that you can’t read a technology-based article, or visit a consumer technology store these days without having the expansion of wearable technology thrust in front of your face. Wearables are undeniably growing in popularity with a consumer base looking for the next big thing, but with an increasing number of company’s looking to get in on the action, the choice is spiraling out of control. Google’s Android Wear platform has a whole array of options being served up by various manufacturers thanks to its open nature, and now it has got a new luxurious addition thanks to aGoogle and Tag Heuer collaboration.
Watches are generally considered to be a very personal item. Consumers around the globe who have been looking for a smartwatch, but prefer to adorn their wrist with a little bit of luxury, have generally been forced to go with the high-end Apple Watch offering. Not necessarily because they prefer Apple’s ecosystem over that of the competition, but usually because devices built on the Android Wear platform have generally been designed and developed to a specific, strict budget. With Swiss-based Tag Heuer getting in on the act, that has all changed.
tag-heuer-connected-main01
Tag Heuer doesn’t need any introduction to watch aficionados around the world. They exist as one of the biggest and most respected company’s involved in the timepiece industry. Now, thanks to the partnership with Google, the Swiss company has introduced the Tag Heuer Connected project; a Swiss-made intelligent smartwatch that is not only built on the Android Wear platform, but one that changes what we think a traditional “smartwatch” should look like.
tag-heuer-connected-main
At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking the Tag Heuer Connected, which was unveiled in New York today, was just a standard premium watch. It carries an extremely familiar looking aesthetic that deviates away from the digital displays of most smartwatches. The hardware is made of titanium with an included sapphire crystal display that sits at 46mm in diameter. So slightly bigger than the largest of Apple’s own intelligent timepiece.
tag-heuer-connected
The display stands at 1.5-inch and sports a 360×360 pixels resolution coming in with 240 ppi. The watch is being powered by an Intel-based 1.6GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM under the hood, but we can’t tell how that translates into actual performance for now. The battery is stated to be a 410mAh unit which should last for about 25 hours if we take Tag Heuer’s word for it.
Tag Heuer Connected is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones. Those looking to purchase the hardware can expect to shell out $1,500, and for that they can choose from a choice of colored rubber straps. There are 7 color options: green, blue, orange, red, white, black, and yellow. Targeted towards the more fitness oriented crowd, the watch has also been given the waterproof treatment, which means it can easily be taken for a dive in your favorite lake or pool.
If you’re in the market for a premium smartwatch, and don’t want to hand over your money to the corporate juggernaut that is Cupertino-based Apple, then how about parting with $1,500 for a connected Tag Heuer. There’s definitely worse things to spend your money on. The watch can be ordered online right now from Tag Heuer as well as Tag Heuer boutiques.

iOS 9.1 Jailbreak Status Update
07:46 By

Can I jailbreak iOS 9.1 on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch? Here we look at the state of the jailbreak with Apple having now released iOS 9.1 final version to the public.
After seeding five development betas to registered developers and testers over a period of a month, iOS 9.1 is here, and it’s finally available, but where does that leave those individuals who choose to have a liberated iOS device?
iOS 9.1 jailbreak status
The introduction of a jailbreak solution last week with Pangu 9 for iOS 9.0, 9.0.1, and 9.0.2 took many by surprise. It was, of course, a very welcome surprise for those who were yearning for an untethered jailbreak on Apple’s latest mobile OS, but it still managed to blindside a lot of individuals. Of course, Pangu 9 release also meant that any vulnerabilities used to exploit iOS essentially enter the public domain, leaving Apple to tear the jailbreak apart and patch any of those holes. It’s widely accepted that the security loopholes used in the latest Pangu jailbreak were patched by Apple in beta 4 of iOS 9.1.
It’s for that reason that it’s vitally important to not go through the process of upgrading to iOS 9.1 if you wish to remain jailbroken. We officially need to wait for actually verified confirmation from Pangu Team that their methods of exploit have been patched by Apple, but in the meantime we can safely assume that this is the case. That really makes iOS 9.1 a danger zone for anyone who is currently enjoying all of the spoils that being jailbroken offers.
If you’ve accidentally gone through the process of upgrading to iOS 9.1 without thinking of the consequences, then it’s definitely advised to downgrade back to iOS 9.0.2 while the signing window is still open on Apple’s side. The same can be said if you’re on an earlier version of iOS and haven’t yet updated to iOS 9.0.2. The signing window won’t last for long though so you better hurry up if you want to update or downgrade to iOS 9.0.2 while it’s still possible. You can find the instructions for it here: Downgrade iOS 9.1 To iOS 9.0.2, Here’s How [Tutorial]. It seems that the age old game of jailbreak cat and mouse between Apple and the teams involved in serving up jailbreak solutions is about to begin once again.
The bottom line is that there’s currently no public jailbreak solution available for iOS 9.1. As previously mentioned, we really need to wait for that official confirmation that the vulnerabilities used for the iOS 9.0 – 9.0.2 jailbreak have been patched. Until then, stay away from the latest version of iOS if you’re a jailbreaker.
Jailbreak-iOS.jpg
Update x1: Apple in a document about iOS 9.1 security has confirmed that they have patched two vulnerabilities found by Pangu team. More details on it can be found here.
Update x2: Apple has now stopped signing iOS 9.0.2 firmware, making it impossible to downgrade from iOS 9.1 for jailbreak.
Update x3: A browser-based untethered jailbreak for iOS 9.1/9.2 apparently exists, but it will likely never be released to the public. Details on it here.

Is This The World’s Longest iPhone Passcode? [Video]
07:43 By

Manufacturers of devices and security conscious individuals are always telling us to be extremely protective and wary of the personal data that we store on our mobile devices. Those who design and build mobile platforms, such as Apple and Google, make a point of integrating functionality that allows security to be placed on those devices running it. Fingerprint detection and the ability to store an access passcode are two examples of this security conscious approach. With that in mind, there’s a new video going viral on the Internet that shows how setting up a secure passcode can be taken to the very extremes of sanity.
It’s always extremely prudent to be additionally careful when it comes to securing your own data on a mobile device, such as an iPhone or iPad. Setting up a four-digit or six-digit passcode along with fingerprint detection via Touch ID is generally deemed to be the way forward. However, some people do like to input a slightly longer passcode or alphanumerical password that better secures their information. However one person who was captured on video entering what can only be described as the world’s longest passcode, may have taken things a little too far.
iphone-passcode
The person in the video was filmed on the Japanese subway system accessing his iPhone by inputting the longest passcode that’s ever been created. One Twitter user just happened to be sitting over the shoulder of the individual filming the whole thing. The filming of the event is as bizarre as the passcode length itself to be perfectly honest. Nevertheless, the video has managed to get into the public domain and is currently going viral across the web as people look on in amazement at the sheer length of the code required just to unlock the iPhone in this video.
The whole video only lasts seventeen seconds, but twelve of those involves an extremely cautious iPhone owner entering his passcode. Madness. We can only imagine the amount of time this individual has lost in productivity from simply wanting to check the weather or download an app from the App Store. If Apple ever needed a perfect real-world example of why Touch ID is a fantastic invention, then this is most definitely it. Check out the passcode in action in the video below for yourself.

Windows 10 Product Key And Activation: How To Find It And How It Works
07:42 By

Here’s everything you need to know about how to find your Windows 10 product key and how activation works on free upgraded versus new retail copies of Windows 10.
Whether you used Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade offer or got a new license off retail, MSDN and the likes, here’s what you need to know about Windows 10 product keys and activation process.
Windows 10 product key
Windows 10 free upgrade product key and activation:
If you upgraded your PC to Windows 10 from a genuine copy of either Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 7, your license will be tied to the hardware you upgrade on, not your Microsoft account, and you won’t get any new product key either. You can verify this using any third-party product key fetching software like ProduKey or The Ultimate PID Checker. They will show you generic product keys like TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99 for Windows 10 Home and VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T for Windows 10 Pro edition.
So what if you want to clean install Windows 10 on the same machine? Yes you can do that by downloading an ISO file, turning it into a USB drive or DVD media and then running the setup for clean install. During install, when Windows setup asks you for product key, simply skip the step and let it complete the installation. Once Windows 10 clean install is complete, your copy of Windows will activate automatically as soon as you connect to Internet. This is because Microsoft knows you clean installed on the same hardware. You can always check your activation status from eitherSettings (WinKey+I) > Update & security > Activation:
windows 10 activation
Or from Control Panel > System and Security > System:
Windows 10 system
Now if down the road you decide to change the hardware, you will need to call Microsoft support, inform them about the change to get your copy activated.
The TL;DR version of this is: If you used Windows 10 free upgrade option, you won’t get a unique product key. Your license will be tied to the hardware you upgraded Windows 10 on, not your Microsoft account. Clean installs will activate automatically as long as they are done on the same hardware.
Windows 10 retail product key and activation:
If you bought retail license of Windows 10, or got a product key either from MSDN, DreamSpark, TechNet and the likes, you obviously have a unique product key that you can enter in Windows setup during clean installations. In case you lose this number, you can use third-party softwares like ProduKey (download from here) to find it on an existing installation.

Connect Bluetooth Game Controller To Apple TV 4, Here’s How
07:41 By

The new fourth-generation Apple TV is indeed leagues apart from the Apple’s previous set-top-box effort, whether it be the iOS-like tvOS environment, or the powerful hardware packed inside. The new set-top-box is well poised to make its place in living-rooms across the world.
Apple has not been shy of marketing the new Apple TV as a device that can serve up as a gaming-console alternative of sorts with support for the Metal framework, the motion sensitive Siri Remote as well as support for third-party gaming controllers.
Apple TV 4 gaming main
In this guide, we will show you step by step instructions on how you can go about connecting a third-party bluetooth game controller with your new Apple TV.
It is important to note here that only those Bluetooth game controllers are supported which are MFi-certified. While Apple officially recommends using SteelSeries Nimbus controller with Apple TV, you can use pretty much any controller as long as it is MFi-certified.
Step 1: To begin, power on the Apple TV and launch the Settings app available on the tvOS Home screen.
Settings Apple TV 4
Step 2: From Settings, select Remotes and Devices and then continue to select Bluetoothunder OTHER DEVICES.
apple tv bluetooth 2
Step 3: Once in the Bluetooth menu, you should be able to see all devices currently paired to your Apple TV via Bluetooth.
Step 4: Now grab your third-party Bluetooth gaming controller and put it into pairing-mode. Since different manufacturers have different methods of enabling pairing mode on their devices, you will have to consult the official documentation that came with your controller to do that.
Step 5: Assuming that the controller is now in pairing mode, you should see it appear listed under “OTHER DEVICES” in the Bluetooth menu on the Apple TV. Once you see it, simply select the device and click the trackpad button on the Siri Remote to initiate the pairing.
IMG_0281
When the pairing process is completed, you should see your controller listed as Connected under My Devices. Now that the controller is connected, you will not only be able to handle those games much better, but even use it to navigate the tvOS environment.

Infuse 4 App For Apple TV Coming Soon, Beta Version Out Today
07:41 By

Infuse, the popular app for iOS and other platforms that allows media lovers to watch their movies and TV shows in an app that not only looks gorgeous but also actually works, is coming to Apple TV.
The news was confirmed by a post on the FireCore blog, with Infuse 4 said to be coming soon. While the app doesn’t yet have a release date scheduled, the good news is that those who already own Pro version of Infuse 3 will be able to get the Infuse 4 Apple TV update for free. Also, if you signed up for an invite to beta test Infuse 4, you should have one in your inbox today.
Infuse-4-Apple-TV-app
The Apple TV’s addition of an App Store in its recent refresh has opened the door for all kinds of media playback apps that would normally only be available to those who jailbroke an older model of Apple’s set-top box. Now that the floodgates are open for the likes of Infuse to get their apps on the platform, expect to see some of the other big hitters in the category to start making their presence known. Plex, for example, is already available for download from the App Store and is, by all accounts, a great addition to the series of apps that has been making it easier to watch content from a media server for years.
As you can imagine, it’s been a very busy fall here, to say the least. However, we’re now (finally!) starting to see a beautiful bright light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is coming into form as Infuse 4 for Apple TV. We think what we’ve made is really great and we can’t wait to share it with you very soon.
Infuse is a very nice app indeed, and the thought of such an app making the jump to the Apple TV and thus the big screen has us eager for more. We were dubious as to whether an App Store was really needed on the Apple TV, but now it’s clear that the possibilities are rather interesting, to say the least.
Maybe the Apple TV just graduated from hobby to something we should really treat with a bit more respect.

Xbox One Backwards Compatibility: List Of All Xbox 360 Games Revealed
07:40 By

The Xbox One has a new Windows 10-powered update on the way on November 12th, and with it, Microsoft will give its game console a bit of a graphical refresh to try and improve the way gamers interact with the machine. Alongside a bit of spit and polish, though, comes a feature that many have been crying out for, with Microsoft finally adding backward compatibility to the mix.
Now, yes, the obvious downside here is that not every Xbox 360 game will be compatible with the Xbox One because the whole thing works thanks to software emulation. That means that Microsoft will have to work some magic on a game-by-game basis, meaning that at its launch, the new backward compatibility feature will only work with some games – 104, to be exact.
Xbox-One-main.png
We had already seen a leaked list of what it was claimed were the titles that the Xbox One would support out of the gate, but we now have official confirmation of those titles by Microsoft, and they would know, after all.
The games include some old favorites ranging from the big-budget Assassin’s Creed II and Mass Effect to some smaller Xbox Live Arcade titles like Zuma. Importantly, given Fallout 4 will be released very shortly, Fallout 3 is indeed on the list of games that will work on an Xbox One once the update rolls out on November 12th.

How To Install tvOS OTA Update On Apple TV 4
07:40 By

There are two ways to update tvOS software on the new fourth-gen Apple TV, one is to use Apple’s OTA (Over-The-Air) software update system and second is to do it from iTunes on a computer. Here we take a look at how you can easily update using the easier OTA method.
If your Apple TV is set to update automatically, then you need not do a thing, with the device handling the download and update process all in its own. If you prefer to take a more hands-on approach though, it’s possible to force the Apple TV to check for OTA updates immediately, getting the latest tvOS update installed sooner rather than later.
Apple-TV-4-Settings_
If the thought of letting your Apple TV handle its own tvOS update has you wishing for something a little more controlled, then here’s how you go about kicking a manual installation off. It’s really not that hard.
Step 1: Press the Home button on your Apple TV remote to be returned to the device’s Home screen.
Step 2: Launch the Settings app.
Settings Apple TV 4
Step 3: Work your way to System > MAINTENANCE > Software Updates.
Apple-TV-System
Step 4: Now tap on Update Software and wait for Apple TV to check for new software update.

Step 5: When an update is available, the Apple TV will tell you and then seek confirmation that you want to install it. Obviously, at this point, you do.
Step 6: Select the Download and Install option.
Download-and-Install
Step 7: Apple TV will now download the update. Wait for download to complete.

Step 8: Once the download completes, select Update Now.

Step 9:  You’ll see a black screen with the familiar white Apple logo and some text explaining the step of the process that the update is currently on. Now would be a good time to go and make a coffee. Hopefully, when you come back, you’ll have a freshly updated Apple TV.
If you want to make sure the update was successful, you can follow steps 1 through 4 again and your Apple TV should proclaim that it is up to date. That’s good, and it means you can go back to watching content and talking to Siri. That’s what you bought the thing for in the first place!

How To Get Google Music And YouTube Red Free For 90-Days
07:39 By

Downloading and storing media on your device is so 2014. Now, as we progress forward into the era of the subscription model, the emphasis is being well and truly placed on streaming services that see media such as music, movies, and TV shows streamed directly to your mobile and connected home devices. Google may be one of the biggest tech companies in the world, but it’s somewhat lagging behind the competition in terms of streaming numbers. In an attempt to correct that, and to promote its own Google Music and YouTube Red streaming services, those who own a compatible Android TV or Google Cast supported device such as Chromecast can take advantage of some free access to both of those services.
While Google Music has been around for some time, YouTube Red is a relatively much newer service, which brings a host of features for enhancing your YouTube experience. Perfect for those Android-powered set-top-boxes and TVs, and the deal is made even sweeter when an otherwise paid service, can be had for free. Here’s what you need.

Requirements:
  • Ownership of a Google Chromecast, Nexus Player, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, or similar Android-powered TV or Google Cast streaming device.
  • Be a resident and located within the United States.
  • A little bit of patience and a desire to get something for nothing for a period of 90-days.
How to get Google Music and YouTube Red free for 90-days:
Step 1: Launch Google’s Chrome browser and navigate directly to the Chromecast offers page where the 90-day access deal is located: cast.google.com/chromecast/offers.
Step 2: Agree to the terms and conditions of Google’s offer by ticking the little checkbox near the annotation before selecting to Continue to progress.

Step 3: You will now be asked to install the Google Cast extension to your Chrome browser, if it’s not already installed. Once added, move on to Step 4.
Step 4: When asked, tap the Select Your Device option to start the process of looking for the connected Android TV or Chromecast device. Note that any device must be on the same wireless network as the computer in order to be discovered.
Step 5: When your particular device is located, select it from the interface to see the available offers.
Step 6: When the offers are displayed, make sure to click Redeem to claim your $6 gift card per device, or free 90-day access to Google Music or YouTube Red.
Thanks a lot for the generosity, Google. Apple’s relatively recent launch of its Apple Music service allowed users to try out the streaming package for 90-days as well.

It seems that Google has also recognized the need to promote the benefits of its own streaming offerings by utilizing Android-powered streaming hardware. They aren’t exactly making a song and dance about it like Apple did when Apple Music launched, but if you know how to access it then it’s a fantastic way of seeing what Google Music and YouTube Red have to offer.
